Business Loan Stacking

It's easy to do, common to see, and one of the fastest ways to sink a business that was otherwise doing fine.

Loan stacking happens when a business takes on a second (or third) loan or merchant cash advance while an existing one is still outstanding, often without the new lender knowing the first obligation exists. It's not illegal, but it's one of the more common ways a fundable business ends up in a cash flow crisis of its own making.

Why it happens

Approval feels good. Capital solves a real, immediate problem. And once a business has been approved once, a second offer often arrives unprompted, sometimes from a broker who has no visibility into what else the business already owes. Daily or weekly repayment structures, common with merchant cash advances, make it easy to underestimate how much of that day's revenue is already spoken for.

How lenders catch it

  • Bank statement reviews that show multiple daily or weekly debits from other funders
  • UCC filings, a public record search shows every lender who has filed a lien against business assets
  • Cash flow that doesn't support the payment schedule once existing debt is factored in

A lender who spots undisclosed stacking during underwriting will typically decline outright, not because the business is unfundable, but because the file wasn't honest about its current position.

The actual risk

Stacked daily debits can consume a large share of incoming revenue before payroll, rent, or inventory are ever paid. Businesses that stack aggressively often don't fail from a bad quarter, they fail from a normal quarter that simply can't cover obligations that were sized independently of each other.

The fix isn't avoiding capital. It's sequencing it: know the full picture of what's already owed, understand real daily cash flow after existing debt service, and only add new capital when the math, not just the approval odds, supports it.
