Is Your Business High Risk?

Some businesses get a harder look before a lender reads a single financial statement. Here's how that list gets built, and what to do if you're on it.

Before an underwriter looks at revenue, credit score, or time in business, many lenders run one more filter: industry code. Certain NAICS/SIC codes are flagged as high risk internally, and a business in one of those categories starts the process with a smaller set of available lenders, regardless of how strong the rest of the file is.

What lands an industry on the list

Chargeback rates, regulatory exposure, cash-intensive operations that are hard to verify, high failure rates industry-wide, and reputational concerns for the lender's own compliance department. Cannabis-adjacent businesses, certain financial services, adult industries, firearms, and some travel and MLM-adjacent models are common examples, but the exact list varies by lender and changes over time.

What being flagged actually changes

  • Fewer traditional bank options; more reliance on specialty and alternative lenders
  • Higher documentation requirements to offset the perceived risk
  • Pricing that reflects the risk category, not just the individual file
  • Some processors and lenders declining outright regardless of financials

What actually helps

Being high risk by industry code doesn't mean unfundable. It means the search has to be targeted instead of broad. Lenders who specialize in a given "high risk" category exist precisely because the broad market avoids it, and they underwrite it properly rather than declining on sight. Knowing which lenders actually work your category, before you spend weeks applying to ones that never would, is most of the battle.

The other lever is documentation. High-risk files that come in clean, with financials that are easy to verify and consistent across every document, move faster and get better terms than ones that make an already cautious underwriter dig for answers.
