Business-to-Business Credit

It's the oldest form of business credit there is, and it's still the fastest on-ramp to building a real business credit file.

Long before merchant cash advances or business credit cards existed, businesses extended each other credit directly: net-30 terms, vendor accounts, supplier financing. That world, business-to-business (B2B) trade credit, is still one of the most effective and underused ways to start building a business credit file.

How it works

A vendor extends payment terms, commonly net-30, meaning the invoice is due 30 days after delivery rather than at time of purchase. Pay consistently on or before that due date, and many vendors report that payment history to business credit bureaus, the same way a bank reports a loan's payment history.

Why it's the easiest starting point

  • Many vendor trade accounts are easier to qualify for than a bank loan or business credit card, some require no credit check at all for smaller opening balances
  • Payment history builds a real, verifiable track record lenders and other vendors can see later
  • It creates immediate operating value, inventory or supplies the business actually needs, not just a credit-building exercise
  • Several well-known vendors specifically built their programs around new Business Bankable Profile development, making them a known, reliable first step

What actually matters once accounts are open

Not every vendor reports to every bureau, and some don't report at all, so it's worth confirming reporting behavior before assuming an account is building credit. Paying early, not just on time, tends to produce the strongest Paydex outcomes, since Paydex specifically rewards early payment rather than simply on-time payment. And utilization matters here too: an account maxed out every cycle doesn't build the same profile as one used moderately and paid down consistently.

Three to five well-chosen, reporting trade accounts, paid consistently for six to twelve months, is often the fastest legitimate path to a business credit file a lender can actually evaluate.
